Game Developers Conference 2020 was delayed by coronavirus concerns

Yesterday, we mentioned that the industry’s well-known game developers such as Microsoft, Epic, and Unity, etc., have announced their withdrawal from the GDC 2020 conference.

The reason for the withdrawal is simple, the current pneumonia epidemic caused by the new coronavirus is serious because these developers do not consider it appropriate to send employees to the exhibition.

Earlier, the MWC 2020 and Facebook F8 Global Developers Conference were also directly canceled due to the impact of the pneumonia epidemic.

As game enthusiasts speculated whether the Game Developers Conference would be canceled, its organizers announced a temporary decision to postpone the summit until the end of summer.

Microsoft GDC 2020

GDC’s organizers write:

“After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March. We fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.”

The host city of the World Game Developers Conference GDC 2020 is located in San Francisco on the west coast of the United States. Actually, San Francisco has entered an emergency due to the epidemic.

Therefore, it is obviously not a wise choice to hold an offline gathering of about 30,000 people at this time, which may cause potential risks such as large-scale infections.

That’s why the conference organizers said in a statement that although it has taken a long time to prepare the conference with partners and exhibitors, there is no way to do it now.

Therefore, for the time being, GDC can only decide to postpone the holding time of the meeting instead of canceling it completely. The organizers said that they were very sad and disappointed with this difficult decision.

According to emails sent by the organizers to developers and ticket purchasers, this year’s game developer conference is expected to be delayed until the end of this summer.

Of course, the specific holding time needs to be determined according to the epidemic situation.
