British Airways: cyber attacks are worse than thought
British Airways confirmed that the cyber attack on September 6 might have caused the theft of passengers. After working with online forensic experts and the UK National Crime Agency, the company announced that the impact of the attack was more severe than previously predicted.
British Airways said it is now alerting another customer who may also be affected, and their personal and payment information may be compromised. The modified data includes 77,000 names with a CVV bank card and 108,000 cards without a CVV bank card, billing address, e-mail address, card number, and card expiration date.
It should be noted that this part of the affected customers is those who have operated on British Airways from April 21st to July 28th. In response to this discovery, airlines urge customers to contact their debit or credit card providers as soon as possible, and they are committed to providing customers with a 12-month credit rating monitoring service and compensation for any property damage associated with the attack. But for now, British Airways clearly stated that there is no indication that its clients’ transactions are fraudulent.
Although there is no evidence that hackers use bank card information for illegal activities, the incident highlights the fact that even large companies like British Airways are equally worried about their cybersecurity.
