Borderlands 3 will soon have full cross-play support across all platforms
Game developer Gearbox Software added cross-platform play to Borderlands 3 last year, though Sony’s platform didn’t support it at first. According to GameSpot, that’s about to change soon, with cross-play features including PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 coming later in the spring, when players on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Stadia are all connected to each other.
It is understood that Sony is reluctant to add cross-platform online functionality to certain games, and Borderlands 3 is one of them, resulting in Gearbox Software’s initial failure to add this feature to Borderlands 3 on all platforms. In fact, Rocket League and Fortnite suffered from the same problem. There are also rumors that Sony asked to share the revenue after adding cross-platform connectivity, and publisher 2K Games was unwilling to do so.
In March of this year, 2K Games released Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands produced by the creative team of Borderlands 3. This game already supports cross-play on all platforms, including the PlayStation platform. At the time, Gearbox Software founder and president Randy Pitchford hinted at the event that Borderlands 3’s cross-play on PlayStation was “inevitable.”
Gearbox Software hasn’t provided an exact timetable yet, and some speculate that this spring is referring to May. In addition, Gearbox Software also announced that new titles in the Borderlands series will be launched in the second half of 2022.
