Arm & Intel Showdown: Surface Chooses Both Paths in 2024’s Bold Reboot
Although Microsoft launched several chips this year, the upgrades were modest and even accompanied by price increases. In recent years, Microsoft’s Surface product line appears to have encountered some challenges, with slower updates and a lack of the surprising innovations that once characterized the brand. This shift is undoubtedly a strategic decision, focusing the Surface portfolio on core mainstream products.
According to a report by Windows Central, Microsoft plans to introduce an entirely redesigned Surface Pro and Surface Laptop series in 2024. Both series will offer Intel and Arm versions and be equipped with new NPUs, enhancing certain features such as improved battery life.
Internally within Microsoft, Surface products utilizing Qualcomm chips are referred to as “CADMUS.” These are optimized for the next-generation Windows operating system, codenamed “Hudson Valley,” and will deeply integrate various AI functions. Microsoft aims to compete with Apple’s M-series chip-powered Mac products through these new designs, offering comparable levels of performance, battery life, and security, thereby providing consumers with more options.
The upcoming Surface Laptop series next year will feature slimmer bezels, rounded display corners, and an expanded array of ports. Rumors suggest the Surface Laptop 6 will be available in two sizes: 13.8 inches and 15 inches. Microsoft also plans to incorporate tactile touchpads and dedicated Copilot buttons for quicker access to Copilot. Additionally, there will be a new Surface Pro series, although specific details remain unclear.
Microsoft is also planning to update the Surface Laptop Studio, although this release is not expected until 2025. Currently, Surface products are priced higher than competitors and lack differentiation, necessitating significant changes to regain a competitive edge.
