ARM has suspended all business cooperation with Huawei
According to internal documents obtained by the BBC, ARM, the chip design company, has suspended all business cooperation with Huawei. The report said that ARM instructed the company’s employees to suspend all contracts, licenses, and contracts under negotiation with Huawei and its subsidiaries. The suspension of the company’s cooperation with Huawei is also caused by the US trade ban because some of the ARM chips are from American companies.
ARM, the world’s top chip design company, is itself a UK company that is primarily responsible for designing chip architectures but does not manufacture chips themselves. That is, the main design chip architecture and then its technology and intellectual property rights to other companies, Huawei, Qualcomm, and Apple are ARM’s top customers.
It is no exaggeration to say that ARM and its chip architecture and design system are an important part of the current world. Just as a large multinational company ARM all technologies are not self-developed, and some of them rely on technology companies in other countries and regions. There are American companies that provide technology to ARM. These US companies must stop any cooperation with Huawei directly or indirectly in accordance with the ban. In view of this, ARM has to temporarily stop working with Huawei to await the development of the follow-up situation, but from the current situation, the situation should be very bad.
Huawei’s currently released processors are almost all based on ARM’s license, using its chip architecture design and licensing to develop its own chips. Although the signed agreement allows Huawei to continue to use the acquired authorization, if the ban does not release Huawei, it will not be able to obtain a new ARM license. This means that the new architecture or new technology released by ARM will not be available to Huawei, which may seriously affect Huawei’s own series of chips.
For Huawei, this situation may be worse than Google’s cessation of licensing Android. At present, both ARM and Huawei refuse to comment on this news.
