AMD EPYC Genoa-X engineering samples appeared: 96 cores and 192 threads
The secondary market occasionally offers delightful surprises, as hardware yet to be officially released appears from time to time, such as prototype processors. Recently, an AMD EPYC 9684X engineering sample surfaced on a second-hand trading platform, displaying a price of approximately $1300 and functioning normally.
The EPYC 9684X processor boasts 96 cores and 192 threads, accompanied by a substantial 1152MB of L3 cache. This is the unreleased Genoa-X, a server processor featuring the Zen 4 architecture with 3D Vertical Cache (3D V-Cache) technology. Its L3 cache is a notable 768MB increase from Genoa’s 384MB, succeeding Milan-X and tailored for optimization in workloads such as databases.
In addition to the EPYC 9684X, it is anticipated that a 32-core EPYC 9384X, 24-core EPYC 9284X, and 16-core EPYC 9184X will be available, adhering to the same product line arrangements as the previous generation. These processors are expected to enter the market around mid-year.
