AMD confirms to launch FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 in 2022Q2

AMD has confirmed that FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 will launch in 2022Q2. This is a major update for AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, which is said to include anti-aliasing and better image quality than FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0.

Unlike NVIDIA’s DLSS or Intel’s XeSS, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 is not achieved through AI-assisted machine learning, it uses low-resolution images for multi-frame synthesis, so it can also be applied to some rival graphics cards. In AMD’s view, implementation through AI-assisted machine learning is a tool to solve the problem, but not a necessary condition for high-quality upgrades, the approach was taken by FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 can benefit more players and make it applicable to a wider range of products and platforms.According to VideoCardz, in the trailer, AMD showed the image quality comparison between native 4K resolution and FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0 and 2.0 through the game Deathloop. In some cases, FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0’s “Performance” mode and FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0’s “Quality” mode provide comparable graphics quality.

AMD is currently working hard to integrate FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 with multiple game engines for game developers to use in games that have been released or are in development. For example, Death Loop will add support for FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 through a patch.

At the upcoming GDC 2022, AMD will explain in more detail how FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 works in a session on next-generation image scaling technology on March 23. AMD confirmed that it will continue to follow open-source practices, placing the source code, development documentation, and examples of FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 on the AMD GPUOpen website for game developers to integrate into their games.
