Amazon will close several Amazon Go convenience stores in the United States on April 1
Amazon will close two Amazon Go convenience stores in New York City and four in San Francisco, as well as two in Seattle, effective April 1st. However, Amazon remains committed to its strategy of expanding its presence in the convenience stores market and is continually researching which locations and features will attract customers.
Furthermore, Amazon has indicated that it is re-evaluating the need to return to traditional office work models, as more and more people have become accustomed to working remotely, even leading to the pause in the construction of their second headquarters in Arlington County, Virginia.
It is apparent that Amazon hopes to reduce non-essential costs through these measures, as evidenced by the announcement of increased job cuts earlier this year. Nonetheless, Amazon stresses that it will continue to expand its presence in the autonomous stores market and relevant technologies, accelerating product sales efficiency through complete automation, such as utilizing sensing technology, such as image recognition, to determine if customers have taken goods in-store, and automatically processing payment through the customer’s pre-logged Amazon account when leaving the store, without the need for any assistance from staff.
Moreover, Amazon appears to be actively exploring ways to improve its physical storefront sales model, despite the closure of physical stores in the US and UK over the past few years due to the pandemic. Amazon still plans to promote a different physical store sales model.
