Wikimedia Foundation Announces New Sound Logo and Sound Content
The Wikimedia Foundation recently launched a new sound logo and sound content in response to the growing demand for voice content in media projects such as Wikipedia and Wikidata, in order to increase recognition.
This sound logo and content were selected through the global Sound of All Human Knowledge contest, with the winning entry created by Thaddeus Osborne, a nuclear engineer based in Virginia, USA, who submitted a range of self-taught amateur music experience, including flipping books, keyboard clicks, and synthesizer prompts. The winner was confirmed by a community vote held by Wikimedia volunteers in December 2022.
“Thaddeus’s submission captures the curiosity and joy that Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects create for millions of people around the world,” said Zack McCune, Director of Brand at the Wikimedia Foundation. “We’re honored by his contribution to the free knowledge movement and grateful to the selection committee and voters for choosing a sound that wonderfully represents free knowledge.”
As part of the prize, Thaddeus Osborne will receive a $2,500 award and a trip to a professional recording studio to re-record the sound logo. In addition, the top ten candidates will receive limited edition Wikimedia sound logo prizes.
Once the professional recording production is completed, the Wikimedia Foundation will begin efforts to integrate the sound logo for use and collaborate with various voice assistants and technology organizations in the coming months.
