TSMC may expand the scale of US plant -sources
TSMC announced in November 2020 that it plans to build a wafer fabrication in Arizona, USA, which will use a 5nm process node and can produce 20,000 wafers per month.
There are rumors that TSMC has considered the possibility of future expansion when purchasing the land. Eventually, by 2024, it will expand from one factory to six, and construction will be carried out in phases. According to Reuters, TSMC’s plan stems from the request of the US government. In addition to solving the continuing shortage of chip supply, it is also trying to reduce the external dependence of the semiconductor supply chain.
The statement provided by TSMC to Reuters stated that the purchase of a large piece of land in Arizona is for more flexibility and expansion is possible, but the first phase must be completed, and then decide what to do next based on operational efficiency, cost economy, and customer needs
Recently, in addition to Intel CEO, TSMC also appeared in the 60 Minutes program, in an interview with CBS News reporter Lesley Stahl, discussed related issues in the semiconductor industry and believed that TSMC has done its utmost to solve the chip shortage problem encountered by automakers. It has advanced the time by two months and caught up with the minimum requirements of customers.
