The Google Home Hub product, Astro is probably the Fuchsia OS device

In the just-concluded Google conference, with the exposure of Google’s upcoming products to the hardware details, there is a device Google Home Hub Astro, most likely the Fuchsia OS device.

Fuchsia OS is an operating system developed by Google. It has been around for a long time, and it is reported that it is expected to replace Android within five years. It is suitable for a wide range of products, from mobile phones and laptops to IoT devices. However, so far we have only seen it running on Pixelbook. Today, we can use this product to confirm that Fuchsia OS can run on more devices.

However, it is challenging for us to understand why Google will use the 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024×600 for the new Astro device. These are incredibly old configurations compared to some current specifications. In addition to this detail, what we know is that Astro will have an Amlogic S905D2 chip and is undergoing EVT testing, and EVT means it will be released soon. Diya Jolly, vice president of Google, told the media at a previous event that Google Home Hub uses the Amlogic chip instead of the Qualcomm SD624 SoC. She also confirmed that, unlike the other smart screens we saw this year, Home Hub would not run on Android Things, but on the “Cast platform.” Combining these clues, some of the media explored the latest Google Home app and updated it to prepare for Google Home Hub. It is in this application that I found the code for Home Hub: “Estelle”. And according to Google employees, Estelle is indeed Google Home Hub.

With this, the media continued to search for the Gerrit source code of Fuchsia, giving a glimpse of “Estelle.”

To be clear, this does not mean that Google Home Hub can run Fuchsia OS out of the box. The official news is that the device uses the “Cast platform”, but it is worth noting that in addition to letting Chromium run in Fuchsia, Google is still trying to port the Chromecast feature to Fuchsia.

Another compelling case comes from the Gerrit source code library of Fuchsia OS. In the past week, a large number of commits have been recorded in a branch called “milestone-1011”. The following amounts of 1011 are exciting. It is very likely that on October 11th, students who are familiar with project management can make a bold guess that it is expected to mean the deadline for milestones. This is 11 days before the release date of Google Home Hub on October 22. There are of course other possibilities, but it is interesting anyway.

Finally, Google Home Hub seems likely to be used as a test device like the Pixelbook. Even if there is a lot of evidence to prove that it is Fuchsia OS, it is just a guess, wait for Google’s new news, and continue to look forward to Fuchsia OS!
