The global sales of “NieR: Automata” exceeded 7.5 million copies

Recently, NieR: Automata announced a new milestone in game sales, surpassing 7.5 million units worldwide, and expressed gratitude to the gaming community for their unwavering support. On December 24, 2020, the game reported over 5 million units sold, meaning that over the past two years, more than 2.5 million additional units were sold. Such enduring sales years after release attest to the extent of the game’s popularity among players.

NieR: Automata, developed in collaboration between Square Enix and PlatinumGames, is a mature-rated action-adventure game and the sequel to both NieR: Replicant and NieR: Gestalt. Set in the same world as its predecessors, the game introduces an entirely new narrative, bearing little connection to the first installment, but is linked to Drakengard 3. The story unfolds in a distant future, chronicling the battle between the mechanical lifeforms sent by humanity’s alien enemies and the android “YoRHa” units deployed by humans on a ravaged Earth.

NieR: Automata made its debut in Japan on February 23, 2017, on the Sony PlayStation 4, while the PC version was delayed until March 17, launching on the Steam platform. The game was unlocked in the Chinese region on April 27 of the same year.

Many players are keenly interested in the development of a sequel to NieR: Automata, given that more than six years have passed since its release. Yosuke Saito, the game’s producer, has consistently maintained a cautious attitude toward the possibility of a sequel. When sharing the news of NieR: Automata’s 7.5 million unit sales milestone, Saito evaded a question from a player regarding a follow-up. In an earlier event, Saito discussed the prospect of a new NieR series installment during an interactive session but chose to jest with reporters rather than providing a direct response.
