Sony produces 1 million PS4s this year to resolve PS5 supply shortages

Sony’s PlayStation 5 next-generation game console released in 2020 is very popular in the game console market, however, due to the use of AMD’s custom SoC, this game console has always had a shortage of supply, resulting in a shortage in the market, and it is very difficult for players to buy it.

According to Bloomberg reports, in order to alleviate supply problems and players’ demand for games, Sony announced that it will continue to produce the PlayStation 4 game consoles, and the production will reach 1 million units, a move that also delays the PS4’s life cycle. As a product released by Sony in 2013, the PS4 has sold hundreds of millions of units worldwide.

It is understood that Sony originally planned to discontinue PS4 production at the end of 2021, but the latest plan is to mass-produce 1 million units in 2022, and PS4 will be produced throughout 2022. In this regard, a Sony spokesperson also stated that “It is one of the best-selling consoles ever, and there is always crossover between generations.”

Regarding the inability to mass-produce enough next-generation game consoles due to the tight global chip supply, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su had previously responded in a financial earnings conference call with investors. Lisa Su said that Sony PS5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X/S are both great gaming platforms, AMD will increase the supply of chips this year.

It is understood that so far, the cumulative sales of Sony PS4 have reached 116 million, and the cumulative sales of PS5 have also reached 13.4 million. As Sony plans to continue to produce PS4 game consoles this year, this number can continue to increase.
