Sony has sold a total of 38.4 million PlayStation 5 units
As stated earlier, resolving the supply chain challenges will boost PlayStation 5 sales. Sony’s earnings report for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2022, released recently, revealed that PlayStation 5 sold over 6.3 million units in the previous quarter, compared to a mere 2 million units in the same quarter last year. This demonstrates that improving the supply chain issues has indeed enhanced PlayStation 5 sales considerably.
Moreover, in fiscal year 2022, Sony sold a total of 19.1 million PlayStation 5 units, surpassing its original goal of 18 million units and raising PlayStation 5’s cumulative sales to over 38.4 million units since its launch at the end of 2020.
Nonetheless, game sales performance evidently suffered due to the pandemic’s abatement and some game development and production delays. Consequently, the total game sales in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2022 were only $68 million, compared to $70.5 million in the same quarter last year. And the cumulative sales for the entire fiscal year were $26.42 billion, significantly lower than the previous fiscal year’s cumulative total of $30.32 billion.
Additionally, the number of PlayStation Network users dropped from 112 million to 108 million, but the number of users who actually subscribed to and used the PlayStation Plus service increased, which raised the revenue of the game and network service business to $7.9 billion. However, taking into account the exchange rate difference between the US dollar and the Japanese yen, it still resulted in a decrease in actual profit.
Sony remains optimistic about its game business’s performance in the future and expects that hardware sales including accessories will rise. But for the PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset that was recently released on the market, there was no more concrete data to share.
