Seagate will release 20TB hard drives to the consumer market in the next few months

At the beginning of this year, Seagate stated that 20TB hard drives with heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology started shipping in November last year, and expanded the shipment of Mach.2 technology hard drives using dual drives, but such products are mainly for data centers

According to TomsHardware, Seagate is currently developing a variety of consumer hard drives with a capacity of 20TB, which will use the perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) and shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technologies. Compared with the heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology used in data center products, these consumer products are more cost-effective. Seagate CEO Dave Mosley said: “We expect to begin shipping 20TB PMR drives in the second half of this calendar year.”

Seagate currently ships 20TB hard drives using HAMR technology mainly for fixed partners and Lyve storage systems. Seagate said that it will launch 20TB hard drives with different technologies (PMR, SMR, and HAMR) to meet the needs of different markets and customers, but these hard drives need to be certified before they are officially launched, and the length of time required is also different. It is understood that although Seagate can put 22TB or 24TB hard drives into the market faster through HAMR technology, many customers still prefer to use hard drives with SMR/PMR technology.

In the second quarter of 2021, the market demand for large-capacity hard disks has increased, and more large-capacity hard disks are released to the market as soon as possible to respond to customer requirements. Seagate recently announced its fourth-quarter financial report for 2021, showing that its revenue exceeded $3 billion, an increase of 20% year-on-year, and a month-on-month increase of 10%, while net profit reached $482 million, a significant year-on-year increase of 190%, and a month-on-month increase of 47%.
