Samsung in contact with former custom architecture engineers from Apple and AMD to design CPU core

In terms of custom chips, Apple is a good example. For a long time, the iPhone and iPad series have adopted their own designed chips, and their performance is far ahead of their competitors in terms of CPU and GPU. Last year, Apple further introduced its self-developed M1 chip to replace Intel products used in the original product line.

Samsung currently uses two SoCs of the Exynos series or the Snapdragon series on some of its Galaxy series phones. The Exynos series is a product designed by itself. In the past, Samsung had its own team to develop custom CPU cores, but due to poor power consumption and performance, the department was disbanded in November 2019 and decided to adopt ARM’s public version design. However, Samsung seems to be obsessed with custom architecture. According to Twitter user @FrontTron, due to the performance of ARM architecture is lower than expected, both Samsung and Qualcomm seem to have shifted their plans to custom architecture development.

At present, Samsung has begun to contact the engineers who used to work at Apple and AMD, hoping to establish a new team to design a customized CPU and GPU product to ensure its leading position in the industry and maintain its leading position in performance. It is understood that one of the engineers contacted by Samsung is a major participant in the development of Apple’s custom chips. He requires that he fully control the team and can choose the members of the team.
After Qualcomm acquired Nuvia for $1.4 billion, it has also worked hard to develop its own CPU cores, which will be used in different devices such as laptops and smartphones. Nuvia was founded in 2019. The core members Gerard Williams III, John Bruno, and Manu Gulati have worked in AMD, Apple, ARM, Broadcom, and Google and have decades of industry experience.
