Samsung formed an AP development team: Provide exclusive solutions for the Galaxy series
A few months ago, Samsung said at its recent earnings conference that it would reorganize the model of the SoC business and formulate a plan to strengthen its mid- and long-term competitiveness to improve the competitiveness of the next-generation Exynos. The new team is rumored to be composed of semiconductor and smartphone department personnel, and long-standing problems in SoC development have forced Samsung to take drastic rectification measures.
According to The Elec, Samsung’s mobile experience business unit has formed an AP solution development team internally, which will be led by executive vice president Choi Won-joon. According to sources, Samsung’s mobile experience business unit may do this to better optimize the use of the Exynos chip on the Galaxy series devices, but the more likely reason is to plan to finish the new AP for its devices.
Choi Won-joon joined Samsung from Qualcomm in 2016 and is an expert in chips. As an important part of a smartphone, the AP is responsible for computing and processor data communication, which determines its performance and power consumption. At present, the mobile experience business department of Samsung adopts solutions from different manufacturers, including products from Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Samsung System LSI business department.
At present, the Exynos chips provided by Samsung’s system LSI business unit are not performing well. The Galaxy S22 series equipped with Exynos 2200 has been pointed out to have performance problems, which require software optimization to limit. It is very likely that the Galaxy S23 series products equipped with Exynos 2300 will not be seen next year, and it is rumored that they will all switch to the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform.
Samsung has yet to respond to the reports.
