Samsung cuts full-year 2022 smartphone shipments by 30 million units
According to South Korean media reports, Samsung has cut its smartphone shipments by 30 million units in 2022, a move similar to major Chinese OEM manufacturers such as Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, and Honor. As for the reasons, there are many factors, including but not limited to, the war has caused sales in the Ukrainian and Russian markets to almost stagnate, the chip shortage has led to increased costs, the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, and consumers’ attention to smartphone replacement is declining.
In fact, before the epidemic outbreak, the growth of the smartphone industry had gradually slowed down. After the outbreak, although the market was still expanding in the first two years, the scale had shrunk. By the third year, the situation became worse. Even giants like Apple and Samsung have to cut orders to avoid squeezing too much inventory, but statistics show that the iPhone is still more competitive than the Android. Hence, Apple is only slightly better than Android makers.
There are no revolutionary new features for OEM manufacturers. It is difficult to attract users with only minor modifications to the system. Affected by the epidemic, consumers will also hold their wallets tightly, so this may have a serious impact on both mobile phone manufacturers and supply chain companies. Paradoxically, the current shortage problem in the entire chip industry does not seem to be resolved.
