Report: Java and JavaScript are the most common languages used in enterprise development
In today’s multilingual programming world, companies are no longer limited to a particular programming language. However, a new report from the Cloud Foundry Foundation (CFF) recently found that companies seem to insist on using Java and JavaScript to meet their enterprise application development needs. As shown, the top 10 most used languages are Java, JavaScript, C++, C#, Python, PHP, VB.NET, C, Visual Basic 6, and VBA.
These results show that Java and JavaScript dominated 58% and 57% respectively in 2018. RedMonk released the rankings for the 2017 and 2018 language rankings in March 2018 and found that Java and JavaScript have also been on the top of the leaderboard. But contrary to CFF’s investigation, RedMonk found that Python and PHP are used more efficiently than C# and C++.
When the Foundation carefully studied the language used by a particular audience, it was found that the larger the company, the more language is used. Python and C# usage are more common in large enterprises.
It has also been found that language usage varies from region to region. For example, JavaScript and Java top the list in North America, but in Asia, Java and C++ are more common.
