PC makers say there is a severe shortage of AMD Threadripper CPUs
Lenovo is AMD’s exclusive partner, and both the previous generation Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3000 series and the latest Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 series processors have exclusive rights for a certain period of time, with the power to supply priority, some PC makers believe that Lenovo’s status is one of the reasons for the shortage of Ryzen Threadripper series. Lenovo has denied this claim, however, saying that the tight supply of the Ryzen Threadripper series has nothing to do with ThinkStation products. In fact, the current ThinkStation P620 models are still only available in the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3000 series, and the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 series has not been seen.
“I think I can speak for everyone that we’re weary of product launches that not everyone can participate in,” said Jon Bach, president of Auburn, Washington-based Puget Systems.
The lack of sufficient Ryzen Threadripper series processors from AMD has led some OEMs to switch their business from AMD to Intel, prompting these companies to offer customers workstations based on the Xeon W series processors, changing the focus of their marketing. AMD assured that the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 series will be available to other partners in the third quarter of 2022, though it did not comment on current supply issues.
