OLED Revolution: Apple Expands OLED Technology to iPad Lineup

As previously reported, Apple is planning a comprehensive update to its entire iPad product line next year. This refresh includes the iPad Air 6, iPad mini 7, and iPad 11, along with the highly anticipated OLED versions of the iPad Pro models in both 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes, signifying substantial changes. The iPad Air 6 is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2024, while the iPad mini 7 is slated for release in the second half of the same year.

According to a report by Sammobile, in addition to advancing the OLED iPad Pro models, Apple is also developing OLED versions of the iPad Air and iPad mini, with both anticipated to debut in 2026 as successors to the next iteration. The screen size of the OLED iPad mini is set to increase from the current 8.3 inches to 8.7 inches, a notable 0.5-inch expansion. However, the OLED iPad Air will maintain its 10.9-inch display, consistent with the current model.

It is understood that both the OLED iPad Air and OLED iPad mini will feature LTPS technology, with their refresh rates likely capped at 60Hz. In contrast, the OLED iPad Pro models are expected to utilize LTPO technology, enabling a refresh rate of 120Hz. Apple is projected to continue this stratified approach for the foreseeable future, distinguishing between iPad models based on their positioning.

Starting with the iPhone 15 series, Apple has been gradually increasing its procurement of OLED displays. Beyond tablets, the use of OLED panels in laptops is expected to rise, with rumors suggesting the introduction of a MacBook model featuring a foldable OLED screen by 2026. Research institutions predict that the shipment of OLED panels for tablets, laptops, and monitors will grow at an annual rate of 41%, reaching 31 million units by 2027.
