Mozilla will no longer support Firefox on Amazon Fire TV or Echo Show

Mozilla recently revealed that it will no longer support Firefox on Amazon Fire TV or Echo Show starting on April 30, 2021. The Firefox browser landed on Amazon’s app store in 2017, and users can install and use this browser on their devices. At that time, due to a dispute between Google and Amazon that prevented users from installing official YouTube apps on Amazon devices, Mozilla’s browser became the first choice for Fire TV users to watch YouTube.

Although Amazon also has its own Chromium-based browser, Silk Browser, Firefox for Fire TV scored more than three times as many users as Amazon’s own browser. In terms of web browser and free application rankings, Firefox ranks ahead of Amazon’s browser.

At present, if a user visits the Firefox for Fire TV page in the Amazon App Store, the update will inform the user that the support of the mobile browser is about to end.

In addition, in Mozilla’s support page, Mozilla also provides additional information. Users who have installed the Firefox browser can still continue to use it on Fire TV devices, but will no longer be able to get feature updates or security updates in the future.
Mozilla finally decided to stop supporting Firefox for Fire TV. The main reason should be the low usage of the browser on the Amazon platform. As a home entertainment terminal, all major video platforms have their own native apps on Fire TV. Through native apps, you can get higher resolution and bit rate support, and are optimized for remote control operations. Although there was a dispute between Google and Amazon that prevented the official YouTube application from logging into Fire TV, the two parties have reached an agreement and users can now install YouTube on the Amazon platform.
