Mobile & computers sold in Russia will have to be pre-installed with Russian applications
The Russian parliament is debating a plan to require all electronic devices sold in Russia, including smartphones, computers and smart TVs, to be pre-loaded with applications from Russian technology companies. Russian lawmakers believe that the bill will protect the interests of Russian Internet companies and reduce the abuse of large foreign technology companies.
If the Russian government approves the bill, it will publish a list of electronic devices that need to comply with the new law. Smartphones, tablets, PCs, servers and smart TVs are expected to enter the list. Suppliers that do not comply with the law will face a fine of up to 200,000 rubles and will be blocked if repeated violations.
Some people worry that Russia will move toward full surveillance because pre-installed applications can be easily used by the government to access private data or even encrypt communications.
