Microsoft will release an update in April to remove Microsoft Edge Legacy

According to the latest support announcement issued by Microsoft, the company has decided to remove Microsoft Edge Legacy from the routine cumulative update released in April 2021.

The reason for the deletion is of course very simple because the browser is no longer supported, and Microsoft has used Chromium Edge to replace it and therefore gave up supporting the old version. It is worth noting that the measures taken by Microsoft will be mandatory updates, at least for the time being.

According to Microsoft’s instructions, the new version of the browser will be directly integrated into the cumulative security update, that is, the installation of the security update will automatically delete the Microsoft Edge Legacy browser and replace it with Chromium Microsoft Edge.

Cumulative security updates cannot be left uninstalled for a long time by users, so as long as they are installed, they will be replaced by mandatory updates. After the updates are installed, the old browser will disappear completely.

Therefore, for the user, there is no choice but to use Chromium Microsoft Edge. After installation, the browser will also be the default browser of the system.

Affected versions include Windows 10 v1803, v1809, v1903, v1909, v2004, and 20H2 versions, other versions will not be affected temporarily.

Among them, Windows 10 20H2 version has built-in the new version of the Microsoft Edge browser, so after installing the cumulative update, only the operation of deleting the old version will be executed.

If the company does not want to delete the old version of the browser, it can only stop installing the update for the time being. According to Microsoft, “With support ending for Microsoft Edge Legacy on March 9, 2021, the out of support desktop application will be removed and replaced with the new Microsoft Edge when you apply April’s Windows 10 Update Tuesday release. This will become available on April 13, 2021. To avoid a disruption in service and continue using your kiosk scenarios, you will need to install the new Microsoft Edge and set up kiosk mode prior to applying April’s Windows 10 Update Tuesday release to your devices.”

Microsoft hopes that companies can complete the transition to the new version of the browser as soon as possible, which means that Microsoft will not release solutions to enable companies to retain the Microsoft Edge Legacy browser.
