Microsoft will continue to launch more PC peripheral accessories only under the Surface brand in the future
Microsoft announced earlier that it will stop releasing mouse, keyboard and video camera accessories under its own brand name and instead focus on expanding its Surface line of PC peripherals.
Microsoft first introduced mouse accessories under its own brand in 1983, mainly for use with Word and notebook services. This decision to discontinue PC peripherals under the Microsoft brand implies that all existing PC peripherals will be consolidated under the Surface brand.
Microsoft has already launched various products under the Surface brand, including mouse, keyboard, stylus, expansion port, and assistive devices for people with disabilities. If it merges its former Microsoft-branded PC peripherals in the future, it means that it will also release a video camera under the Surface brand.
However, it is unclear whether Microsoft will continue to offer budget-friendly mouse products under the Surface brand or stick to its premium pricing strategy for its PC peripherals.
The reason for replacing its Microsoft-branded PC peripherals with the Surface brand is apparently that Microsoft’s hardware profitability has dropped significantly. Moreover, there is no need to market similar products under two different brands at this point.
