Microsoft releases an out-of-band update (KB5005394) to fix printing issues
Earlier, researchers discovered that the Windows 10 system has a serious print service vulnerability, and attackers have used this vulnerability to launch attacks on enterprises.
The vulnerability was submitted to Microsoft and confirmed by the company. At the same time, Microsoft released an emergency out-of-band update to fix the vulnerability, at least the attacker could no longer exploit the vulnerability.
However, a large number of companies found that the printer was not working properly while successfully blocking it. It turned out that the out-of-band update released by Microsoft damaged some services and caused printing abnormalities.
Subsequently, Microsoft released a new update to fix the problem of not printing normally, but there is still a problem: some non-standard smart card users cannot print.
After some companies reported abnormal printing services, Microsoft investigated and found that the smart card authentication devices used by these companies had some irregularities.
Microsoft stated that users of smart cards that do not comply with section 3.2.1 of the RFC 4556 specification experience exceptions when they try to call certain printers, scanners, and multifunction devices.
This is especially true after deploying the routine update in July 2021 in an environment where a domain controller is used. The main reason is that non-standard smart cards cannot complete the verification.
For this reason, Microsoft introduced new out-of-band updates Windows 10 KB5005394 and Windows 7 ESU KB5005392 to fix non-standard smart card printing problems.
