Microsoft may use FidelityFX Super Resolution on Xbox Series S/X
During Computex, AMD announced FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology to further improve game performance. Like Nvidia’s DLSS principle, FidelityFX Super Resolution also uses low-resolution images for multi-frame synthesis, but it is not purely based on AI-assisted machine learning. It can provide a frame rate twice that of 4K native resolution, with 4 levels of image quality to choose from. AMD said that even with the highest image quality, there will be a 60% performance improvement at 4K resolution, but game developers must apply this technology to game engines.
At present, it is not only PC-platform game developers who are interested. As customers of AMD’s semi-custom services, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X have the possibility of using FidelityFX Super Resolution in the future. In an interview with IGN, a related person from Microsoft said that they are excited about using FidelityFX Super Resolution technology on the Xbox platform to improve frame rate and high-resolution performance, and will share more information on this soon.
Compared with the PC platform, the hardware configuration of the game console is quite fixed, and it has a longer service period. It is not easy to improve the image quality without reducing the performance or to improve the performance without reducing the image quality. Microsoft selected the RDNA 2 architecture on the Xbox Series S/X from the beginning and probably hopes to better expand various functions in the future to meet the performance requirements of the entire life cycle of the Xbox Series S/X as much as possible.
In the previous Game Stack Live event, Microsoft has announced that Xbox Series S/X now fully supports AMD FidelityFX. After AMD officially released the RX 6000 series graphics cards based on the RDNA 2 generation, Microsoft once stated that Xbox Series X/S is the only game console with complete RDNA 2 features.
