Micron starts shipping 2550 NVMe SSD: the World’s First Client SSD With 232-Layer NAND

According to previous reports, Micron launched 232-layer TLC NAND flash memory a few months ago and plans to start formal production by the end of 2022.  Recently, Micron announced that it has started shipping 2550 PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid-state drives using 232-layer TLC NAND flash memory. Micron claims that this series of SSD has advantages in density and power consumption. Compared with its previous generation products, the write bandwidth has increased by 100%.

This series of SSDs supports the NVMe1.4 protocol and has three specifications 2230, 2242, and 2280, and each specification provides three capacities of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.  Among them, the maximum sequential read speed of the 256GB SSD is 4500MB/s, the maximum sequential write speed is 2000MB/s, the maximum random read is 380K IOPS, the maximum random write is 400K IOPS, and the TBW is 150TB; the maximum sequential read speed of the 512GB SSD is 5000MB/s, the maximum sequential write speed is 4000MB/s, the maximum random read is 500K IOPS, the maximum random write is 600K IOPS, and the TBW is 300TB; the maximum sequential read speed of 1TB SSD is 5000MB/s, the maximum sequential write speed is 4000MB/s, the maximum random read is 550K IOPS, the maximum random write is 600K IOPS, and the TBW is 600TB.

By optimizing the process of entering and exiting the energy-saving state, Micron adopts a more advanced process technology for the controller, using HMB (Host Memory Buffer) technology to clear DRAM and other means to further reduce the power consumption of solid-state drives, so that the notebook has a longer battery life. Micron claims that the sleep power consumption of this series of SSDs is less than 2.5mW, the idle power consumption is less than 150mW, and the active power consumption is less than 5.5W.

At present, many manufacturers including YMTC, Samsung, and SK Hynix have launched NAND flash memory with layers higher than 200, and it is estimated that more corresponding products will be available to consumers soon.
