Meta Quest v50 update ushered in major functions

Recently, Meta has finally launched the v50 update of the Quest series headsets. This v50 brings several practical functions and performance improvements and is applicable to both Quest 2/Pro models. Let’s take a look at each of these features one by one.

The first is game multitasking, which actually appeared on Meta Quest Pro. As the name suggests, this feature allows players to click the Quest button on the right controller to open the menu during the game and use some 2D applications such as browsers without closing the game.

Considering that the Meta Quest Pro is equipped with a stronger Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ and a larger 12GB RAM, and when Quest 2 is only XR2 and 6GB of RAM, it really takes a lot of optimization to transfer this function to Quest 2.

The second function is the direct touch function, which has also appeared in the previous public beta. Compared with the existing gesture control that requires pinching fingers, this feature allows users to swipe and click directly on the UI interface, just like what is done on smartphones and tablets. In order to make the user experience better, the developers of Meta also redraw the UI of the system interface. All users who have updated to the v50 version can find the switch of this function in the experimental settings column in the system settings.

At the same time, a new gesture is also introduced into the current gesture control system, which can achieve better VR space teleportation movement. At present, developers can experience this new feature through the latest version of First Hand, and try to add this new gesture to their own applications and games.

The last important update mentioned by Meta officials is the performance of the Meta Quest Touch Pro controller. The Touch Pro controller is self-tracked by the camera, while the Touch controller emits infrared light and is processed by the headset to capture the light. Therefore, the Touch Pro needs several seconds to initialize the positioning when it is started, which is slightly slower than the Touch controller. In the v50 update, the developers drastically reduced the initialization time of the Touch Pro controller, making it more responsive.
At present, the official version of v50 should be gradually pushed to every Quest series headset that can successfully connect to the Meta server. If you have not received the update, please check the network and try the update button in the settings!
