MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G SoC is the first SoC with AV1 hardware acceleration

The AV1 technical standard is a new video technology standard developed by giants such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix, Intel, Facebook, Twitter, Cisco, and Apple.

The main feature of the technical standard is free and open and has excellent compatibility, which can significantly improve the compression rate of video files and the transmission efficiency of streaming media playback.

The AV1 codec can compress video and streaming media files with little loss of quality, which can save Internet traffic and is also free.

Compared with HEVC technology, the main advantage of AV1 is that it is open and free. Now operating systems such as Windows 10 already support the AV1 codec.

On the mobile side, Google has supported the AV1 standard since Android 10, but some developers such as Netflix have already compatible with AV1 through the software layer in their apps.

The chipmaker MediaTek has launched the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G SoC. According to the latest news from MediaTek, this SoC already supports AV1 technology.

MediaTek said in an interview with media that “MediaTek is engaged in consistently upgrading its offerings to enhance user experience, and AV1 technology is a prime example. Video is now the most used form of communication, with 70% of Millennials and Gen Z reportedly using streaming services. Industry reports state that the video streaming market is likely to expand at a CAGR of 19.6% and touch $124.57 billion by 2025, and it is one of the principle drivers of 5G services. MediaTek is leading the way in enabling effective video streaming with AV1.
