Major OneNote update for Windows 11 is coming
If you are a heavy OneNote user, you may have seen that the OneNote for Windows 10 version will be cut off. This version is the UWP-based client that is directly pre-installed with the system.
Another version is the OneNote desktop version (Win32 version) that comes with Office. Microsoft believes that it is confusing to provide two versions, so it has planned to completely cut off the UWP version. The previous report showed that Microsoft will announce relevant news in the second half of the year.
Today, Microsoft revealed that the OneNote desktop version is being tested internally. The new version is mainly adapted to Windows 11, including visual effects based on the Mica mica material language. Other features include the latest pen and ink improvements and new navigation menus.
I don’t know when this version will be released, but it feels like it should be soon. When the OneNote desktop version is updated, Microsoft will gradually invite users to migrate from the UWP version to the Win32 version. The final deactivation time of the UWP version is October 2025. Before that, users can still use it but there will be no updates and new features. In the future, OneNote will only retain the desktop version and will be updated as a key version.
