LG announces mass production of 17-inch foldable OLED panels
LG has announced the commencement of mass production for its 17-inch foldable OLED panels designed specifically for laptops, a testament to their commitment to proliferate the use of OLED screens in IT devices. Following their pioneering introduction of the 13.3-inch foldable OLED panel for laptops in 2020, this expansion further augments their product range, solidifying their preeminent technical prowess in the OLED industry.
This avant-garde 17-inch foldable OLED panel from LG incorporates tandem OLED components previously reserved for automotive displays, markedly extending its lifespan and making it apt for IT applications. LG’s trailblazing initiative in 2019 introduced the tandem OLED structure, characterized by its innovative dual-stack configuration. This design boasts two emission layers (EMLs) that yield enhanced brightness and distribute it more effectively across the OLED components, resulting in superior stability and an elongated operational lifetime.
The newly mass-produced 17-inch foldable OLED panel also integrates a specialized material designed to substantially mitigate creases in the screen’s folding zone. When juxtaposed with conventional foldable panels, it promises a more seamless display and superior image quality. Adopting an “inward-folding” design, it facilitates effortless folding, with the curvature of the folded section minimized to 3R (a curvature radius of 3mm), culminating in an ultra-svelte, seamless screen architecture that melds seamlessly upon folding.
The resolution of the 17-inch foldable OLED panel stands at an impressive QHD+ (2560 x 1920), boasting a distinctive contrast unique to OLED technology. When fully unfurled, the screen can serve as a 17-inch portable display or tablet, with a 4:3 aspect ratio to maximize immersion. Adjusting the angle transforms it into a 12.3-inch laptop screen with a 3:2 display ratio, obliterating traditional device boundaries to cater to users’ idiosyncratic needs.
Furthermore, LG has endowed this panel with a high-sensitivity touchscreen solution, allowing users to execute tasks with either a stylus or their fingertips. Embedded touch sensors within the panel amplify touch performance, offering a tactile experience reminiscent of authentic handwriting.
