July 2022 Steam Hardware Survey Report: AMD processor share has risen sharply

As August kicks off, Valve has released the results of its Steam hardware survey for July 2022. In the latest report, AMD’s CPU has achieved very impressive results, and its share has risen sharply. Meanwhile, Linux is likely to overtake macOS as the second most popular gaming platform on Steam within a few months, no doubt thanks to Steam Deck.

In the latest statistics, 33.73% of Steam users who use PCs chose AMD’s CPUs, while Intel’s CPU share dropped to 66.26%. It seems that AMD has recently released a variety of mid-to-low-end CPUs and the strategy of price reductions has been quite successful. AMD will soon release the Ryzen 7000 series based on the Zen 4 architecture, and Intel will also replace Alder Lake with Raptor Lake, and the two sides may set off a new round of war in the next few months.

But compared to CPU, AMD’s performance in GPU is much inferior. Going into 2022, AMD graphics cards have improved a lot in terms of supply, with the Radeon RX 6000 series increasing month by month, but by a much smaller margin than Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 30 series. In the current statistics, NVIDIA’s GPU ratio is 5.8 times that of AMD. If you narrow it down further to the Ampere and RDNA 2 architectures, Nvidia has an even bigger advantage, 10.9 times that of AMD.

In June, Windows 11’s share crossed the 20% mark for the first time, and its share increased by 1.77% to 22.03% within a month. However, in July, the share of Windows 11 declined, down 0.11%. In addition, the share of macOS users fell by 0.71%, leaving 1.74%, while Linux increased to 1.23% driven by Steam Deck, and the positions of the two parties may be reversed in the future.
