Japanese chip manufacturer Renesas fires and damages some equipment
The snowstorm in Texas, the United States, has already caused some fabs in Austin to stop production, which has dealt a heavy blow to the entire industry that is already facing a serious shortage.
At present, the industry with the most serious shortage problem is car companies. A large number of well-known car companies shut down some production lines or reduce overall production capacity because of the lack of necessary chips.
However, things are getting worse now. For example, a fire broke out in Renesas, a well-known Japanese chip manufacturer, which caused some equipment to be damaged by the fire.
Renesas’ main business is to provide chips for car companies. Obviously, these fires will bring greater difficulties to the lack of chips faced by car companies and make chip supply tighter.
After the fire broke out, the CEO of Renesas also quickly issued a statement. After all, any problems with the chip manufacturer at this juncture may cause great concern.
The CEO of Renesas said that a fire broke out in a chip factory near Tokyo, Japan. The fire broke out in a clean room that caused some wafer production to be stopped.
At the same time, the fire also caused about 2% of the plant’s equipment to be damaged. Although it does not seem to be much, it will take a long time for the chip production line to maintain.
The company disclosed that the direct damage caused by the fire was about 17 billion yen, equivalent to about 156 million U.S. dollars and that 300 mm silicon wafers were currently affected.
The company expects that it will take several months to shut down for maintenance, so the failure of the plant to produce normally in a short period of time will inevitably cause more damage to the automakers.
The CEO of Renesas stated that we are worried about the huge impact on chip supply, so we will seek all possible means to minimize the potential impact.
