Intel will ship XMM 8160 5G modem in 2019
Intel officially announced that the XMM 8160 5G modem that the company initially planned to ship in 2020 would start sending in the second half of 2019.
The 5G network equipment equipped with the modem is expected to be available in the first half of 2020, and the network speed of these devices can reach 6Gbps.
The XMM 8160 5G modem is a multi-mode product that is therefore widely compatible with the various networks currently in existence. After all, 5G networks are not yet commercialized.
The new modem can support a wide range of different device categories for deployment with 5G networks, and Intel will provide a leading 5G network solution.
The XMM 8160 5G supports the 5G NR standard and is compatible with traditional networks such as 4G LTE, 3G, and 2G. Multimode allows device manufacturers to reduce the size of their devices.
This modem supports 5G and 4G LTE network simultaneous connection. When there is no 5G network around, the device will automatically switch to the 4G network to ensure uninterrupted.
Although the XMM 8160 5G and other 5G network chips have very high transmission speeds, the drawback is that the range of transmitted signals is tiny.
Therefore, this aspect can only rely on operators to deploy 5G network infrastructure, as far as possible to improve signal penetration without being hindered by air to improve the overall transmission speed.
Now that the 5G network test is in full swing, commercial 5G should appear in 2019. As for large-scale deployment, it will take several years to complete.
