Intel CEO revealed that it will establish a semiconductor manufacturing center in the United States
Since Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger announced the IDM 2.0 strategy at the end of March this year and determined the formation of Intel Foundry Services (IFS). Intel not only expands on the basis of the original fab but also looks for a new location to build a new fab to expand its production capacity to meet future foundry needs.
Intel first invested about $20 billion to build two new wafer fabs in the Ocotillo campus in Arizona, USA, and then invested $3.5 billion to upgrade the wafer fab in New Mexico. Then Pat Gelsinger met with EU officials to discuss the possibility of establishing a new semiconductor production facility. The site is tentatively selected at an abandoned air force base near Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The goal is to build a semiconductor manufacturing base with eight wafer fabs worth $100 billion and build a vertically integrated semiconductor supply chain. Intel also invested $10 billion to build a new fab in Israel, and the first phase of construction has already begun.
In an interview with The Washington Post recently, Pat Gelsinger stated that Intel will determine the exact location of the next semiconductor manufacturing center in the United States before the end of this year, and it is likely to be near the university to facilitate the recruitment of talents. The manufacturing base will have 6 to 8 semiconductor manufacturing modules, using Intel’s most advanced manufacturing technology (4nm or 3nm process) and chip packaging (such as EMIB and Foveros packaging technology) facilities, and there will be a dedicated power plant.
The cost of each semiconductor manufacturing module will be between $10 billion and $15 billion, so Intel’s investment in this semiconductor manufacturing center in the next ten years will be as low as $60 billion and as high as $120 billion. Pat Gelsinger stated that the current plan is to invest $100 billion to create 10,000 direct jobs, plus the 100,000 surrounding jobs that will be driven. Essentially, the goal is to build a little city.
