Inferno Drainer Shuts Down After $70 Million Heist
One of the most popular tools for hacking cryptocurrency wallets, Inferno Drainer, announced its definitive closure. On November 26, the service team, in a statement published on Telegram, declared that “time for us to move on.” Nevertheless, they assured that all files, servers, and infrastructure essential for operating malicious programs would not be destroyed and would remain active to enable users to “smooth transition” to alternative services.
Inferno Drainer gained prominence in early 2023 and became even more well-known following the shutdown of the Monkey Drainer tool. Like its counterparts, Inferno provided software for hacking cryptocurrency wallets and charged a commission of 20% on the amount stolen by users.
According to analytics from the Web3 Scam Sniffer web platform, since February, the service has stolen nearly $70 million from over 100,000 victims. However, the Inferno Drainer team itself claims that the amount of stolen funds exceeds $80 million.
Blockchain security firm CertiK noted that Inferno Drainer was “one of the most damaging phishing kits to the community we’ve seen.”
