In 2023Q2, global tablet shipments fell by 11% year-on-year

Recently, the market research firm Canalys released its latest survey report, indicating that the global shipment of tablet computers in the second quarter of 2023 amounted to 31 million units, an 11% decline year-over-year, continuing the market contraction to reach the lowest shipment level since the first quarter of 2020. However, a slight divergence from previous trends was noted, as the resurgence in educational demand led to a 1% year-over-year increase in Chromebook shipments for the second quarter of 2023, totaling 5.9 million units.

Compared to the 13% decline year-over-year in the first quarter of 2023, the downward trend in global tablet shipments eased somewhat in the second quarter. Mirroring the smartphone market within a sluggish economic environment, Apple fortified its position as the leading supplier through its iPad models, with shipments reaching 12.3 million units, thereby claiming nearly 40% of the global tablet market share. Despite a 14% year-over-year drop in shipments, Samsung retained second place with 6 million units. Amazon and Lenovo, ranking third and fourth, suffered significant declines in shipments, falling by 33% and 39% respectively, while Huawei secured the fifth position with 1.7 million units shipped.

After seven consecutive quarters of decline, the global Chromebook market witnessed a modest increase in the second quarter of 2023. Hewlett-Packard, as the principal supplier of Chromebooks, captured over 10% of the market share, with shipments growing 69% compared to the same period last year. Lenovo maintained its second-place position with a 15% increase in Chromebook shipments, while Dell, ranking third, suffered a 15% decline year-over-year, with both manufacturers shipping around 1.3 million units. Acer and Asus respectively ranked fourth and fifth, with market shares that had both slightly declined from the previous year.
