HP announced to discontinue HP Dev One laptop
Currently, most laptops come pre-installed with Windows, and devices that come with pre-installed Linux distributions are relatively rare. This can be understood because Windows is indeed more suitable for most people, and users who need Linux, such as developers, are familiar with the process of installing the system. However, some manufacturers still release products with pre-installed Linux distributions, such as HP’s Dev One, which was released last year. Unfortunately, according to Liliputing and Phoronix, HP recently announced that this laptop was discontinued in January of this year.
The HP Dev One laptop is a 14-inch lightweight laptop with a 1080p display with a brightness of 1000 nits. It is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 5850U processor, a Zen 3 8c16t + Vega 8 15W processor, and comes with 16GB of DDR4 memory and a 1TB PCIe 3 SSD. More importantly, it comes pre-installed with a Linux distribution called Pop!_OS, which comes from System76 and is based on Ubuntu modifications, and is also used in System76 devices.
HP Dev One laptop was released in June of last year with a price of $1,099, which means that it was discontinued less than a year after it went on sale.
Liliputing contacted HP about this matter, but HP did not disclose the reason why Dev One was discontinued and also indicated that there are no plans for the next generation of the product. The only thing that can be confirmed is that HP will continue to provide support until January 2026, or within three years from the date of purchase by the user.
Considering the configuration and price, we can guess the reason why Dev One was discontinued and has no sequel: the sales were not particularly optimistic. After all, the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 5850U processor is already a processor released in 2021.
