GPU Shipments Soar to Record Highs in Q3 2023

Jon Peddie Research (JPR) recently released its latest GPU market data report, showing that in the third quarter of 2023, the shipment volume of GPUs used in PCs (including both integrated and discrete graphics cards) reached 71.9 million units. This represents a 16.8% increase from the previous quarter, but a 5.1% decrease year-over-year. Looking ahead, Jon Peddie Research forecasts a compound annual growth rate of 4.18% for GPUs from 2022 to 2026. The prediction suggests that by the end of 2026, the installation base will approach 5 billion units, with the penetration rate of discrete graphics cards in PCs expected to reach 30% over the next five years.

AMD’s overall market share saw an increase of 2.4% compared to the previous quarter, while Intel’s market share declined by 3.7%, and Nvidia experienced a 1.3% rise. In terms of GPU unit shipments, there was a 16.8% increase over the previous quarter, doubling the average growth rate of 8.8% seen over the past decade. Specifically, AMD’s growth was 36.6%, Intel’s was 10.4%, and Nvidia’s was 25.2%.

In the third quarter of 2023, the overall attachment rate of GPUs to PCs (including integrated and discrete graphics cards, desktops, laptops, and workstations) was 117%, marking a 1.6% increase from the previous quarter. There was a significant 37.4% increase in discrete graphics cards for desktops, a 6.1% quarter-over-quarter increase in tablet shipments, and a 15.2% quarter-over-quarter growth in the overall PC market, although there was a 6% decrease compared to the same period last year.

GPUs have always been a leading indicator in the PC market, as they are installed in systems before PC vendors ship them. Jon Peddie Research notes that most manufacturers are predicting an average decrease of 4.9% for the next quarter, which seems somewhat low compared to the previous quarter’s forecast of 7%. Historical data from the past decade shows that the average increase in shipments from the third to the fourth quarter is 0.9%.
