Google works with WordPress to create ‘Newspack’ CMS
The parent company of WordPress.com, Automattic, Google, and a number of private foundations have built a modern online platform, Newspack. In short, Newspack is a simplified version of WordPress designed to be a faster, more secure and popular content management system. This low-cost and secure platform is also funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and the Lenfest Institute for Journalism.
“It is trying to help small publishers succeed by building best practices into the product while removing distractions that may divert scarce resources. We like to call it “an opinionated CMS:” it knows the right thing to do, even when you don’t.”
Newspack doesn’t focus on the back end, it’s a simple solution for small teams. Think of it as a rewritten lightweight version of WordPress that has removed unnecessary parts. The exact features to be included in the Newspack are still under consideration. Research by local media groups will be passed to Google and Automattic for analysis. The goal is to create a platform that is truly popular with small publishers so that it can be easily managed and the site visitors can get a great experience.
