Google prevents certain Linux web browsers from using its services

Recently, some netizens found that they were restricted to log in to their Google account using some Linux browsers (such as Konqueror, Falkon, and Qutebrowser), and the page displayed that they could not log in due to security reasons. It’s unclear when Google started blocking these browsers. The netizen posted this situation to Reddit. Some people replied that they had encountered similar problems, but others said that the Falkon browser could still log in normally.

Google Chrome 70

BleepingComputer tested it on multiple computers, and they found that it was indeed impossible to log in to their Google account on Konqueror or Falkon browser. When you sign in, you are told:

“Couldn’t sign you in

This browser or app may not be secure. Learn more

Try using a different browser. If you’re already using a supported browser, you can refresh your screen and try again to sign in.”

The help link given on the login failure page may be displayed for the following reasons:

  • Don’t support JavaScript or have Javascript turned off.
  • Have unsecure or unsupported extensions added.
  • Use automation testing frameworks.
  • Are embedded in a different application.

At present, this phenomenon is that most people cannot log in, but some people can use it normally. Netizens have therefore started discussions. Some people think that Google may be performing A / B testing, or it may be related to the installed version of QtWebEngine, or it may be due to enabling account settings such as 2FA. But Google has not yet given a clear answer.
