Google makes it easier for users to understand the impact of heat waves and urban heat island effects through search, maps

Google has recently begun adding heatwave warning information to its Google Search and Google Maps services, which include displaying the expected start and end times of heatwaves, as well as providing information on how to mitigate the effects of heatwaves and related health information. This information is being provided in partnership with the Global Heat Health Information Network. Prior to this, Google had already added natural disaster warnings, such as for storms, floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes, to its search services.

On another note, Google will use a tool called the Environmental Insights Explorer to explain the impacts of urban heat islands, and will analyze tree canopy cover through an AI and aerial photography-based feature called “Tree Canopy”. This will enable users to more easily understand the percentage of tree canopy coverage and locations in urban areas, as well as the proportion of shaded areas. The technology behind this tool is related to Google’s Tree Canopy Lab, which was established in 2020 and used aerial photographs and near-infrared imaging data to analyze green cover and help cities plan to reduce heat.

The Environmental Insights Explorer tool has already been launched in 350 major cities worldwide, including Atlanta, Sydney, Lisbon, and Paris.
