Google joins the OpenChain project as a Platinum member

According to the Google Open Source blog, Google is currently joining the OpenChain project as a Platinum member. OpenChain is designed to make the compliance of open source licenses simpler and more consistent. At the same time, Google will join Facebook and Uber to join the OpenChain board of directors and become a board member.

Over the past 14 years, Google’s open source project working group has developed rigorous policies and processes so that we can license large open source projects correctly and compliantly. This helps to make more extensive use of open source software within the company while making our upstream work easier. For us, this is to make our work more in line with legal requirements, but also respect for the community.

So far, there are no open source standards that are generally accepted within the organization. Most organizations, such as Google, have to piece together the policies and processes of open source projects.

The OpenChain project is changing this to help train and manage open source projects by defining core requirements and courses for quality compliance programs. Both open source and OpenChain are closely related, both in terms of software and hardware.

Google believes in this mission and is pleased to have the opportunity to use our knowledge to pave the way for other aspects of the industry. We can help large companies and small companies to develop standards that are rigorous, clear and easy to comply with.
