GNOME 40 will redesign Shell UX

GNOME 40 was originally planned to be released next spring. On December 18, the GNOME Shell team announced the GNOME Shell UX plan for GNOME 40. The team made an updated design for the “Activities Overview”. During this period, after months of design discussions and 6 separate user research activities, specifically, significant changes will be made to the way users open and manage applications and workspaces. Click the “Activities” button on the top bar of GNOME Shell to access the workspace on demand.

Previously, the user would first see an empty desktop in the original installation of GNOME Shell. Except for the icons in the top bar, there was no visible prompt. The current redesign is to replace the blank desktop with the “Activities” mode. The new interface includes a horizontal workspace switcher, a favorites bar, and a visible search bar.

The key changes include:
  • Better overview spatial organisation
  • Helpful boot and empty states
  • Improved touchpad navigation
  • More engaging app browsing and launching

In addition, the goals of this redesign include providing a better overview of the spatial organization; useful guidance and empty states; improved touchpad navigation; and more attractive application browsing and launching.
