FTC inquiries about Sony’s acquisition of Bungie
Three months ago, Sony announced the acquisition of Bungie for $3.6 billion. The core of Bungie is the Destiny series, and it is also the original creator of Halo, which also has a deep relationship with Microsoft. While much smaller than Microsoft’s $68.7 billion acquisition of gaming giant Activision Blizzard, Sony is stepping up game development in its own way.
According to The Information, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is deeply investigating Sony’s acquisition of Bungie, which will delay the entire transaction process by about six months, until early 2023. It is understood that the focus of the US Federal Trade Commission is whether games like the Destiny series can continue to be launched on multiple platforms. Given that Sony has stated from the beginning that Bungie will still develop games for multiple platforms, the FTC should not block the completion of the deal.
However, this move by the US Federal Trade Commission more or less shows that the recent review agency policy may be tightening, Microsoft’s previous acquisition of Activision Blizzard was also scrutinized by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, requiring additional documents related to the transaction.
