Expand the FOV by increasing the ambient light, a gamer modded his own VR headset
Current VR headsets are by no means perfect. The resolution, brightness, and FOV alone are enough for hardware manufacturers to fiddle with for a long time, especially FOV, which significantly affects the immersion of VR. Still, increasing FOV will lead to an increase in manufacturing costs. Recently, however, a player used a slightly more ingenious method to expand the FOV of his Valve Index headset.
The solution used by the player named ShodahVR is called Ambilight. He designed a ring of LED light strips on both sides of the inside of the headset, which is embedded in the mask. When the player is playing a VR game, the light strip will emit light of the same color as the edge of the VR game screen. For example, when you look at the blue sky in VR, the circle of LED lights will emit a corresponding blue color, which will give people the illusion of a more comprehensive picture. After all, the human eye is not particularly concerned about the edges of the field of view.
