Bard’s YouTube Upgrade: Google’s Chatbot Extracts Information from Videos

Google recently announced an upgrade to their chatbot, Bard, enabling it to swiftly comprehend YouTube video content. Google believes Bard is now capable of extracting valuable information from this vast video repository, providing rapid responses to user inquiries. The company also expressed its hope that Bard will aid users in gaining a more in-depth understanding of YouTube video content. Development is ongoing for related YouTube programming, aiming to enrich conversations with Bard.

Google illustrated the new functionality of Bard with an example: “Imagine searching for a recipe to make an olive oil cake and being unsure about the number of eggs required. Instead of rewatching the video for answers, you can directly query Bard.” This feature undoubtedly offers a quicker solution to user needs, significantly saving time.

Theverge tests of this feature have been conducted, where Bard was provided with a video about making coffee. Bard was able to summarize the demonstrated process and methods, including ingredients, steps, and various detailed aspects of the preparation. However, during the summary, Bard made an error by mentioning a non-existent step of shaking the beverage for 30 seconds, which was not in the original video.

The media also indicated that this feature is still in the testing phase and not without flaws. For example, when they requested the “complete recipe” from Bard based on a video, Bard failed to generate any content. However, when they later asked for a “step-by-step explanation of the method,” Bard then provided the complete recipe.

Lastly, the media raised concerns that Bard’s functionality might harm some video creators. For instance, the video blogger used for testing set their complete recipe as paid content, but now users can potentially access recipes for free through Bard. Thus, Google needs to address such issues to ensure the vitality of the YouTube platform.
