ASMedia is a subsidiary of ASUS, which is responsible for the design of various types of chips and is also one of the important customers of TSMC’s 28nm process node orders. In a recent event, ASMedia stated that its USB 4 and power delivery (PD) controllers have been certified by the USB-IF, which is the first USB 4.0 controller in the industry to receive this certification.
According to
DigiTimes, ASMedia’s USB 4.0 and PD controller models are ASM4242 and ASM2464PD, and it is not clear what type of device it is designed for. ASM2464PD should have USB PD power supply capability, which means that no additional controller needs to be added, making product design simpler. ASMedia said that its USB 4 and PD controllers have already provided samples to customers for verification, and both solutions are expected to pass the verification stage this year.
It is understood that the ASM4242 has a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface and provides a bandwidth of 64Gbps. It is a dual-port controller, so it is not enough for both ports to run at a rate of 40Gbps, but it should be enough for most consumers. ASMedia has also added support for DP Alt Mode, and USB 4 is of course backward compatible with Thunderbolt 3 as well.
ASMedia will start mass production of USB 4 master chips as soon as the third quarter of this year, and it is expected that the strong shipments of USB 4 and PD controllers will drive mid-to-long-term revenue growth. It is rumored that AMD has also
chosen to cooperate with ASMedia on the new generation of 600 series chipsets. It is rumored that the new chips will be manufactured by TSMC’s 6nm process.
