ARM CEO talks about acquisitions and regulatory issues at the Nvidia deal
Chip technology developer ARM is currently in a transaction with Nvidia, considering various issues such as supervision and its complexity, the transaction time may be longer.
For Nvidia, the acquisition of ARM seems to be a very good idea, but for the semiconductor industry, the acquisition of ARM is very bad news.
Quite a few industry companies worry that Nvidia’s acquisition of ARM will affect technology licensing and competition. After all, Nvidia itself is a super competitor in the chip field.
For Chinese companies, after the British-originated ARM was acquired by Nvidia, compliance with US export control bans may also cause many problems.
A few days ago, Simon Segars, CEO of ARM, answered such questions in an interview with the media. Segars said that a strict review by the regulator was expected.
Because both Nvidia and ARM are extremely important companies in the world, the regulator will definitely review this merger and acquisition very carefully.
When talking about whether Chinese regulators will release the transaction, Segars emphasized that being acquired by a US company will not change ARM’s original intention to continue to provide technology to the world.
Segars stated that the US export control-related issues after the acquisition will not cause new troubles to ARM.
Because it is necessary to consider the original invention place of the technology, in other words, the original invention place of the core technology of ARM is in the UK, so it is protected by British law.
Of course, even saying this will not solve the regulatory issue. ARM is currently working closely with Nvidia to provide all the necessary materials and information for a follow-up review.
This transaction is currently subject to strict audits in major global markets including the United Kingdom, China, and the United States, so the completion time may be as long as 18 months.
